PAREMPI Policy Workshop on Transport Emissions marks project finalisation

The PAREMPI Policy Recommendations Workshop on Transport Emissions, co-organised with the EASVOLEE project, was successfully held on 10 December 2025 in Brussels, bringing together policymakers, researchers, and industry representatives to discuss pathways toward cleaner transport and improved air quality in Europe.

The workshop opened with welcome remarks by Alexandru Ghiurca, Project Officer at CINEA, followed by an institutional perspective from Georgios Tzamalis, Policy Officer at the European Commission, highlighting the policy relevance of transport emissions and their implications for European air quality and climate objectives.

The policy session continued with presentations from the two organising projects. Päivi Aakko-Saksa, PAREMPI Project Coordinator from VTT Finland, presented key policy-relevant findings from the PAREMPI project, focusing on particle emissions, secondary pollutants, and their impacts on urban air quality. This was followed by Spyros Pandis, EASVOLEE Project Coordinator from the University of Patras and FORTH, who shared insights from EASVOLEE on emission sources and atmospheric processes relevant to transport-related air pollution.

In the afternoon, the workshop offered expert views from industry, providing sector-specific perspectives on current challenges and future opportunities. James Corbett, Environmental Director at the World Shipping Council, addressed emissions from the maritime sector; Thanasis Megaritis, Science Associate at Concawe, discussed road transport emissions; and Rick Miake-Lye, Vice President and Director at Aerodyne, provided insights from the aviation sector. Together, these contributions highlighted the importance of cross-sectoral dialogue in shaping effective and realistic transport emissions policies

A panel discussion, moderated by Päivi Aakko-Saksa and Spyros Pandis, enabled an open exchange between speakers and participants, reinforcing the value of collaboration between EU institutions, industry, and the research community. The workshop was moderated throughout the day by Andrea Hrzic (Magellan Circle).

Alongside the main programme, a poster exhibition running throughout the day showcased ten EU-funded research initiatives addressing air quality and transport emissions. The exhibition stimulated informal discussions during breaks and highlighted synergies between projects such as PAREMPI, EASVOLEE, AEROSOLS, REALCHEM, GREEN RAY, NEX-EL, UNIC and nPETS.

The Transport Emissions Policy Recommendations Workshop marked a key milestone for the PAREMPI project, supporting the development of evidence-based policy recommendations aimed at improving urban air quality and protecting human health. The strong engagement from policymakers, researchers, and industry representatives underscored the shared commitment to advancing cleaner transport systems across Europe.
