Marine Campaign

PAREMPI conducted a dedicated measurement campaign focused on the marine sector in October 2024, complementing the emissions assessments. This campaign took place at VTT in Finland and involved a collaborative effort from five organizations across three countries: VTT (campaign lead), Tampere University (TAU) and the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) from Finland and IEM from the Czech Republic. In total, 35 experts participated in this comprehensive measurement effort. The Work Package leader from Poland closely followed the measurement process.
The marine emissions were simulated using a diesel generator designed to replicate exhaust emissions from ships operating on various marine fuels. The campaign included the testing of commercial marine fuel (DMB grade) and a range of other marine fuels with varying sulfur, aromatic, and ash contents.
Additionally, the campaign investigated ammonia-containing exhaust, which is significant in the context of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems aimed at reducing nitrogen oxide emissions, as well as in scenarios where ammonia is used as a fuel. The team also examined low-sulfur diesel fuel and biodiesel.
To enhance the investigation, a permeation oven was connected to the exhaust line to study how individual aromatic and long-chain hydrocarbon compounds within the exhaust matrix affect secondary aerosol formation. Comprehensive instrumentation was utilized to collect data on secondary particulate emissions and their formation mechanisms from precursor emissions in the marine sector. The complexity of the measurement setup posed various challenges, all of which were effectively managed by the skilled team, fostering a collaborative and positive atmosphere throughout the campaign.
